SEO Quick Tip of the Day #21 – Meta Descriptions

Here’s your SEO Quick Tip of the Day.

Are you Meta descriptions compelling to your audience? Don’t forget that your descriptions aren’t written for the search engines, but for your potential customers.

  • Each page of your site should have a unique description
  • Include a call to action within the description
  • The description shouldn’t just describe the page, but compel searchers to click
  • A well written description will bring more qualified customers and get more clicks than other SE results with no description, or poorly written ones.
  • If you do not include a description, the search engines will take text from the page to try to describe it for you. This is undesirable because it may be completely irrelevant to your page.
  • When possible, include your keywords in the description. This won’t help you with ranking, but it will make your listing in the SERP’s more relevant.

    Hi Justin,

You bring up a really good point. It’s obvious in the search results that some of the results are taylor-made for the search, while others are just an excerpt from a larger paragraph.

Unfortunately, I’m not sure how to do this (I’m a better realtor & writer than programmer!) Any ideas for someone using wordpress?

    Thanks!

Thanks again for the input on meta descritptions. I am working on that now. What I have been doing is including the area such as Port Orange Real Estate and then adding the name page such as ABout Us. How can I make a title for a page such as this one more unique and inviting? Once again thanks!

I am also a newbie when it comes to Meta descriptions but I think you have proven a point there. A well written descriptions makes more appealing to readers. When I do search I usually choose those topics that have good descriptions on it as well. It is more catchy at the same time it makes readers more apt in clicking those ads to see what it is all about.

Everything from your meta description to your content will assist you in your SEO. You have to do everything right, not just one.

We have made a compleate rewrite of our meta descriptions and we are seeing good progress in Spanish keywords. We are a Spanish Real Estaete Agent in Menorca. But English keywords such as “estate agent menorca” or “rent apartment menorca” are being more of a challenge. Competition is a big factor, I suppose.
